Nope. I've only made 2 more trips around the sun than Mojo.

Have you noticed that the more trips you make around the sun the harder it gets to hang on?

"...the Dead Sea was sick." That's funny!

My kids went to a private school and they had the Isaiah passage over the door to the gym. Each time we went into the gym for some school event I mentioned the jet engine line. I was always the only one who laughed.

I remember having to get up off the couch to change the TV channel. Today I've got some lady named Alexa that does that for me.

I put the hot melt glue on the gimp, unless I am working with a velvet or chenille or corduroy or any type of fabric where the hot melt glue will not come off easily. Then I put the hot melt glue on the fabric, especially in the corners. I've learned this from many mistakes. It seems like it's too easy for me to touch the fabric in the wrong place with the bottom side of the gimp.

Sometimes I can cut the fibers to get the glue off. I use small scissors and cut as few fibers as I can. I test it on a scrap to make sure it won't be visible.

I've tried to use the end of the glue gun to reheat the glue but I have not had success with this at all.

Chair looks great, Steve.

64Buick, when I started my upholstery career a guy who had about 30 years working as an upholsterer said the number one thing I can do is learn how to sew boxed cushions. He said that is the hardest thing to master. I did and he was right.

There's a few videos on youtube that show how to turn corners with welt cord. One is from a guy who does autos and he has a good explanation of doing an inside corner.

Instead of seeing your leather work as a failure, try to get something out of the experience so it will become an expensive learning experience instead. And then try not to have to pay for the same lesson again in the future. :-)

You can also search this forum. One of the most asked type of technical questions seems to be about boxed cushions.

I saved Green Stamps from the grocery store when i was a litle kid. No one wanted them so I took them. My mom got the books for me and every week I got the stamps after she went grocery shopping and I stuck them in the books. I would spend hours going through the catalog. I had my eye on that canoe.

After many years of collecting the Green Stamps, my mom took them all away from me so my older sister could get something she wanted from the catalog.

I saw George Burns at age 89 on a talk show. He was taking questions from the audience. A lady asked in a very condescending tone of voice, "What does your doctor say about you smoking all those cigars?"

George took a puff from his cigar and said, "My doctor's dead."

Thanks for the comments Steve. And I loved those old people exercise jokes you posted. 5 years ago I realized I had gotten old and fat. I resigned myself to never going wilderness canoeing again. Today I'm planning a canoe trip this Spring.

Last month I took my first Carnival Cruise. 7 days in the Caribbean. I went snorkeling 3 days and took hikes every day around 6 different islands. Two years ago I probably would not have even gone on the cruise, and if I had, I am certain I would have spend almost all the time on the ship or just walking around the port shops near the boat.

Our Standard American Diet is not helpful in growing old.

I actually got home at 7:45 tonight. I spent an hour after work walking on the indoor track at my rec center. I've been walking 5 or 6 days a week for 50 to 60 minutes each time. I started in January of 2017. This January, 2018, I cut out processed foods and all sugar products. In the last 11 months I have lost 40 pounds. Last week I threw away my 44" waist pants and my 38" waist pants are a bit loose.

A customer told me about this book 3 years ago. It took about a year for me to get started, but I"m glad I did. Younger Next Year, by Chris Crowley

"A small retail business owner who handles his own financing doesn't stand a chance nowadays."

Too many people work hard at ripping off others as a way of life. Too many people live with an entitlement mentality and have no sense of responsibility to pay off their own debts.

A person can't pay their bill but they have money for drugs, tattoos, junk food, tickets to concerts, and guns. Who wants to go to some crooks house, or government housing project, and try to collect money?

I don't take credit cards so I'm not in this part of the discussion.

Regarding charging 3% to use a credit card, the other side of that is what if someone offers to pay cash and asks for a disocunt, then do you give a cash discount? I don't because I'm doing the same amount of work and my work has a cost/value to it that I do not want to discount. And for me, and I know like Paul's thoughts on charging for using a credit card this may not be the same for everyone, but when someone asks for a cash discount I feel like they are assuming I will not pay tax on the cash payment and therefore they are wanting some of that money not being paid in tax.

General Discussion / velcro a cushion to the wall
« on: October 30, 2018, 08:45:14 AM »
I'm making cushions for a 5 sided kitchen banquet. The seat cushion is no problem. I made a paper template as my guide. It's a one piece boxed cushion.

The back cushion is one cushion also. It is shaped to fit the 5 back sides of the banquet. SteveA mentioned using velcro to attach the back cushion to the wall. If I make a boxed cushion that is shaped to the 5 back panels, what is the best way to apply the velcro?

Can I use sticky back velcro on the vinyl boxed cushion and wood frame?
Is it best to add some staples to the velcro on the wood frame?
Is it best to sew the velcro onto the boxed cushion?
Is 2" wide velcro OK?
Run pieces of velcro across the top of the 5 panels and down the two ends?

I've not done this before so I appreciate your thoughts and past experiences.

General Discussion / Re: Customer won't pay.

If I get too depressed I just wait until Friday on this forum: End of the week humorous amusing anecdote (formerly Friday Funny)

Won't pay amount due. They usually pick up their items with a truck coming from their warehouse so the check has always been in the mail.

There are some customers (interior designers or stores) who want to pay me when they get paid from their customer. This is a big NO for me. If I'm working for the ID or the store then they pay me when the job is completed. Me getting paid has nothing to do with whether or not their customer pays them.

My goal is to have zero minutes spent on accounts receivable each year.

I told this customer that I work hard to provide a level of service and quality that is second to no one. I have no desire to work hard to get paid.

I got an email yesterday from a salesperson at the store wanting to know about a new job. I responded with a copy of the last email I sent to the person (one of the owners) who pays the bills.

General Discussion / Customer won't pay.
« on: October 29, 2018, 08:46:03 AM »
My first ever customer who refuses to pay their bill. It's about 2 months late. My terms have always been 50% with the order and the remainder paid when the job is finished.

I know I'm lucky that this is the first one. It happens to way too many small business owners.

It's a furniture store and my only advantage is that I have their fabric for a few upcoming jobs. I need to be paid before we talk about this fabric or any upcoming jobs.

It's easy to speculate why they aren't paying: no cash flow, they feel thsy it's not a priority, ??? I'm staying away from guessing and only focusing on the issue of I haven't been paid.

One recourse will be to sue in small claims court and then sell my judgement to a collection agency for a percentage of the amount. I don't know if I would want to take the time and have another filing fee to get a court order to force them to pay the small claims court judgement. As an LLC in my state I can do both of these things myself without a lawyer.

At this point I have decided that if they pay me, all future jobs will be cash with order.

And I do have email correspondence where they said they would send me a check that day, which was 5 weeks ago. My latest emails have gone unanswered.

The cost of doing business.
