I have been doing a easy and long lasting fix on these for years.  I know you have some scrap boat topping laying around.  I sew a square the size of your old spring support with a hem on the ends to slid #9 edge wire through.  I cut notches in the hem but not through the thread where the springs and bend over tabs go.  Slide the edge wire through the ends, hook the bend over tabs through the front and hook up the springs in the back and bam...done.  A nice support that wont cut through the foam, strong, and fast to make.  The early eighties Chevy pickups had this same support system the full length of the frame.  I have found the short heavy springs at my local hardware store.  Hope you understand my explanation.  It sure looks good in my head!

It can be done in 5 hours no problem since you have had experience in the past, however you are cutting your profit way to tight.  I would bid it for 8 hours.  Remember the customer is supplying there own liner so your working for straight labor.  Front, rear and quarter glass must be removed and replaced.  The glass shops around me get 20 to 30 per window to R&R them.  I do them myself and still charge the same rate.  This is on top of the install time.  Rear seats and panels must be removed and replaced also.  Panels under rear seat and seat belts must be removed and replaced.   Visors, mirror and those crappy brittle side dome lights that snap in.  Just jogging your memory bank.  Is it all coming back now?  lol

Remember to check the window gaskets for flexibility.  New ones are not very expensive and are well worth the cost if the old ones are dry and brittle.  Also check to see if the window gaskets have the chrome strip in them.  The new reproductions  don't fit well and can be time consuming to replace.  All these "upsales" would be extra of course.  With your customer purchasing his own materials I am sure they are looking for the most cost effective install and will probably guarantee the rubber is good.  Don't believe it!! 

Remember this,  If you go to the dentist for just a teeth cleaning and check up you will be lucky to get by for $200 and maybe 20 minutes in the chair.  I would bet that  the dentist can't install that liner,  just like you can't clean your own teeth.  So what is your education worth?  Don't under sell your ability.   Roy.

If you are familiar with installing convertible tops you should expect a full day on the Jeepster.  If you are not experienced with soft tops your dealing with a more difficult install and should plan on at least two days, possibly longer.  Make sure you check the condition of the wood bows when the customer brings it in.  They are very prone to dry rot, deterioration at the corners, and where your wire-on tips mount.  My experience is most owners (especially ones who bring there own tops) don't want to spend what it costs for new bows.  They usually try to patch them up with puddy for the quick fix.

     That is a one day job no problem.  Actually about four hours should do it if you have some experience with convertibles, and don't have to answer the phone or wait on customers!  No rear seat or panel removal.  The well lining removes from the tack strip so it is fairly easy to get to the bolts.  You will have to remove the rear top sail panels from the tack strip and fold them forward over rear bow to get to window curtain if it is a one piece tack strip (just can't remember if it is.)  The headliner may only need to be removed at the rear sail panels.  A couple elastic strips screwed to the tack strip and panel clips with velcro at the quarter window.
       Make sure you find out why the window broke before starting.  These windows don't just break, there is usually a cause.  If it was vandals or an item in the rear storage area, then no problem.  If it broke while lowering there may be a problem with the top frame.  Roy.

I have owned this very same year boat for 14 years.  Have it for sale right now.  The cover on it is 13 years old made from Top Gun.  The boat sits out 24-7 and the cover is faded but still in great shape.  I also did the interior about 5 years ago and took out the horrible pink and aqua.  The blue and yellow looks much better. 
I made the cover two piece in front.  The windshield base has gypsy studs so I can put the top cover over the bow for storage and reverse it for towing.  That way the water runs off during storage and the wind flows over it in transport.  Roy.

T-Tops....glass panels you remove from the roof of your car.  Dawng, us car guys think a little different.  I was wondering how one would cover them myself, and why?  Guess I am still wondering.   ;D

I used a Rattle snake down the center of a custom chopper seat.  The customer wanted the rattles left on hanging off the end of the seat.  Looked pretty good when done.  Bullfrog is another neat one for highlights.  They don't go far.  Roy.

Global warming my patutie!!  I was down in Tampa 3 weeks ago and returned to -15 degrees.  More snow yesterday and they say it may get in the 30's tomorrow.  Well, we will see what tomorrow brings.  Not felling to sorry for all you palm tree watchers "roughing it"     Let's hear how you are doing in July when you step out of the shower at 7 in the morning and you can't seem to get dry.  Then I will be at the lake in 86 degrees and 10% humidity.  Sweeettt!   P.S.  Picture to follow in 4 months.   ;D

These are vinyl.  The Ford V-8 was done with Partners leather matching vinyl.  The 57 Bel-air used the original replacement vinyl with the cloud pattern cloth for the inlay.  The interior was a Cars Inc. kit so I ordered extra material and finished the trunk to match.  The Mustang was the Partners again with blue gator leather laid behind. 

I know what you are referring to though especially with the Allante and soft touch vinyl’s which have the fuzzy white back.  The strings can be very hard to deal with.  Then put a dark color on top of that and the edge will really show.  Roy

Ya, I have a new set of smaller shears with a very sharp point that cuts very clean and close.  Almost to close if I am not careful.

I have done a few inlays recently that I really like the looks of.  It is just like doing an appliqué only reversed.  I put the inlay color I wanted on the backside and stitched the design.  Then carefully cut very close to the stitching to remove the unwanted area.  If you want it padded just put it over scrim foam.  You can also trim the scrim from the backside right at the edge of the inlay to make it pop a little more.  Hope it helps, Roy.

     The original spring frames had a tack strip crimped into the channel of the frame.  Most of the reproduction seats don’t have this.  From the looks of the covers this is a custom street rod you are doing and the need to stay true to original is not needed.  I just hog ring all mine to the spring right next to the frame.  The spring is crimped into the side frame and cross supports so it won’t effect its performance at all.  You may want to put welting or 3/8” covered sponge rod around the sides and top of the backrest.  The originals had this and I use it on all my customs.  This will finish the edge and keep from having a gap between the frame of the seat and the deck lid.  Hope it helps, Roy.

     Remember the pen salesmen, (I still have one call with his bad jokes.)  Their sales pitch used to be that they mistakenly printed x number of pens with your name on them and can make you a great deal.  My dad had one on the phone and agreed to purchase the pens.  My dad said ”ship them out right away!”  Of course the salesman was happy and just needed my dads name and address.  He told him to just look at the pen and hung up.    We never got our pens.  Imagine that.   :D
