General Discussion / Re: Cost of Leather Hides Set to Rise
« on: March 24, 2012, 12:09:23 AM »
Off topic- but Chris started it.

Here's the cool thing about living in the sticks. We buy our eggs from a friend who has free range chickens (I eat two a day). When she does feed them grain it is hormone free. She also has grass fed beef and goat meat. Her goat sausage is to die for. And in the fall she lets us gather all the pecans we want.

Another Amish couple supply us with butter and three kinds of cheese. And its the best you have ever tasted. They also have 100% organic whole chickens. $20 a pop but oh so good.

For whole milk and drinkable yogurt Kerts Dairy is the largest supplier with grass fed cows in the state and they have a honor store at their facilities.

Haven't found a supplier for leather yet but I'm sure if I looked hard enough I could find a good deal on rattlesnake hides.

That homemade cheese and butter sounds REALLY good!  I'll take a few of those rattlesnake hides too.  You should start an export business.  I'll make the first order!   ;D  Just let me know how much the shipping is.

H U G E difference between a Sailrite machine and a Consew. I am talking H U G E...........:)

Chris

Chris,

You still own your Highlead don't you?  Mine is still going strong and I have sewed some really heavy leather with it.  Been sewing 9/10 oz latigo to 2 layers of heavy tonneau vinyl using #22 needle and 138 thread.

Getting ready to buy a bigger leather machine.  Will sew up to 7/8" thick.

Thanks to Peppy, I deleted a spammer's account while they were actually online in the act of spamming!

Bet they were surprised......unless it was just one of those automatic bots!

General Discussion / Finished my first door panels today.
« on: February 27, 2012, 01:12:56 AM »
One of our friends sons has a little Mazda pickup that he's been working on fixing up.  He picked up some door panels at the junk yard, so I told him I would cover them for him.  Figured it help him out and give me a chance to practice.  Wanted to do something a little different for him, but not too complicated.

General Discussion / Re: Source for Stainless Steel Hog Rings ??

are these what your looking for they are on Rochford supply wed site I've ordered form them a couple of times and been happy with the service.

http://www.rochfordsupply.com/shop/Ropes_and_Cords/Shock_Cord_%28Bungee%29/Hog_Rings/index.html

I've ordered quite a few things from them that were hard to find.  I thought I'd checked all of my suppliers...guess not!

Be sure to check their close-out listings too.  Sometimes you'll find some good prices.

I found some for a good price on eBay.  Got some with points good for piercing material and also got some that have flat ends that I'm using for the bungee cord.  I don't have to worry about the flat ends snagging on something.  The place I ordered from were selling them for making wire cages.

Try Allens Canvas.  It's in Texas and they have all sorts of options.  That's where I buy all the goods for floor cloths.  Remember:  the smaller the number the heavier the goods.  www.allenscanvas.com

Thanks, I noticed that about the weight too.  If it's a number designation, then the smaller number means the heavier weight material.  But if it's described as weight, like in oz.'s, then 14 oz. is heavier than 7 oz.!  Don't know why they use two different ways of describing the weight.

Nice to know about the shrinkage too.  I'm thinking about getting it with a waterproof coating already on it.  Not sure if I'd have a problem with shrinkage with that.  I'll be sure to ask when I call.

Thanks everyone!

Found a few possible leads.  Will call them tomorrow and check.

If anyone has any suppliers, please post or PM me.

Thanks.

I want to make some tool rolls and other HEAVY weight gear.  I'm looking for some brown canvass duck like Carhartt coats are made from.

Thanks June.  The material is not quite what I'm looking for.

Here's some on Ebay with free shipping.

Drop me an e-mail if your looking for wholesale quantities.

Jim

Jim,

That's not a bad price on eBay.  I wonder if they'll fit my upholstery hog ring pliers?

I'm using them to attach the ends of some bungee cord together that holds a motorcycle seat cover.  I had been using SS lockwire in .041 and thought the hog rings would be much quicker.  They are, but I figured I should use SS since it would be outside in the weather.

Did you have a wholesale source?  I looked at some of mine and only saw regular hog rings.

Rich,

Thanks for the offer, but I'll find some.  I just figured someone on here might use them and know of a source.

Here's a picture of what I'm using them on.
