Do people still write checks for everyday items ?
I don't know if people still write checks at the grocery store. But many still write them to pay for things such as a plumber's house call, or property taxes, and yes.....their upholsterer.

Checks still account for 40% of my sales. 40% credit cards. 20% cash.

My wife is a personal banker at a very large banking chain (let's just say that it's a bank, and it's "of America").
She still sees people bring in their teenage kids to open their first account. And yes, they make them order those damn checks.

We build the 3 % CC fee into our prices and kept that cost hidden from the customer. I would venture to guess that 98 % of our sales are CC. We would have to close our doors if we stopped accepting CC payments. It is the way of the world. People buy using their CC's or debit cards and we have some who do it just to gain miles or bonuses from their CC companies.

Many of our customers are from the upper crust of society otherwise they would not be driving $ 500 K buses. Many of them are retired business owners so some will say " I will send you a check or pay cash so you wont have the added expense ". They get it. I think we would find our sales transactions would be more cash and check if we did more local work. Still I cannot imagine a business not accepting CC payments in this day and age. Especially considering Square makes it so easy. They pay we get our money directly deposited within 2 days. If we relied only on checks for out of State orders, we would have to wait till the banks got done floating the checks till we could ship.

Almost all the businesses and suppliers we deal with have our CC number on file. Some are major corporations. It really saves the wife a lot of bookkeeping headaches as well as time. We order and the bill is paid for versus having to write checks all the time.

I do not even have a check book. I haven't wrote a check in years. I just use my debit card, cash or CC. Do people still write checks for everyday items ?

I'm glad to hear Albany Foam is still around. I have used them in the past for down envelopes and this time I could not get through on the phone so I thought they may had gone out of business. Their stuff was always excellent.

You have to be very careful not to cut the twine with a staple or it will fail. Either right then or right after you deliver the piece. I use the staple gun for this once in a while when I don't think the wood can handle a 4 or a 6 oz tack. Or when I just can't get at the rail but can with a gun. I don't care for the practice actually.

I had forgotten about stapling the twine. Instead of using nails to wrap the end of the twine, you hold the twine towards you, two staples, then towards the piece, two more staples. Then continue tying.

What is everyone's thought on that method?

I also buy my Dacron from Ronco. Their high loft is the best I've found. It doesn't have that Brillo pad feel like so many other suppliers.

The trick is to order on Monday so it doesn't stay shrunk during shipping over a weekend. It takes 3 days to arrive. I cut it open as soon as it comes in, and it recovers fully.

You're right Darren. I shouldn't say easy job. Hardly ever is.

This salon wants to just replace seats to buy some time. I imagine she has plans for down the road. But I quoted her a price for 4 New seats that would be less than buying one new chair.

Be careful saying "easy job". I've had salon chairs, message tables etc...become a loosing proposition because I didn't allow enough time for all the disassembly and a few rusted/bent bolts.

If it is an upscale salon, show them some samples of Crypton. I've used a fair bit of it for the hospital here. They have some nice patterns and solids.

Last week I phoned the local supplier in the Bronx called Grammercy - in business about 50 years.  The phone rang through to Albany Foam.  Grammercy closed and Albany bought out all the stock + phone number.  Albany was very nice and stated they can set up an account for me and ship whatever I need.  I will miss walking around the Grammercy warehouse and picking out supplies instead of thumbing through a catalog.
Albany will also make custom cushions - I know I've read some here have used them as well.  There's another company called B+M in CT.  who will deliver to my area - also good people with good prices.

What other suppliers are around ?  Someone mentioned to me Greentex in NYC or DLT on line - .  I have to do some research to have a few new places to call

SofaDoc told me about Ronco and we have used them 1/2 doz. times. The folks there are very friendly, they have always been able to answer all of our questions and yes their product is quality. Most of all it saves me a lot of figuring and no messy workroom.
